Championing Cannabis Advocacy: An Exclusive Interview with David Spang of Coastal Green Wellness

SCHAA is proud to highlight key industry leaders who are making an impact in the hemp and cannabis space. This month, we had the pleasure of speaking with David Spang, owner of Coastal Green Wellness and a passionate advocate for cannabis reform. In this exclusive interview, Spang shares his insights on industry challenges, policy reform, and the mission behind his business.

Advocacy and Industry Leadership

A Passion for Change: The Fight for Hemp and Cannabis Reform

SCHAA: What inspired you to join the fight for hemp and federally legal cannabis, and how has Coastal Green Wellness contributed to this movement?

David Spang: Over the past seven years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the struggles and triumphs of the hemp industry. The legal landscape has been complex, filled with regulatory hurdles and misinformation. What truly motivated me to get involved was seeing the dedication of JD and the American Healthy Alternatives Association (AHAA) in advocating for safe and accessible hemp products.

When it became evident that South Carolina needed its own advocacy group, I knew I had to step up. That’s why I became deeply involved with the South Carolina Healthy Alternatives Association (SCHAA)—to push for policy changes that benefit businesses, consumers, and the industry as a whole.

At Coastal Green Wellness, our mission has always been rooted in education. From day one, we have worked to break the stigma around cannabis, helping individuals understand the science behind hemp and CBD. This same philosophy drives my advocacy efforts, as I work alongside SCHAA to influence state and federal policies that shape the industry’s future.

Navigating Challenges in Cannabis Advocacy

SCHAA: What challenges have you faced in advocating for cannabis and hemp policy changes, both in South Carolina and at the federal level?

Spang: One of the toughest aspects of advocacy is balancing my role as a business owner with the time and energy required to push for meaningful policy changes. Running Coastal Green Wellness is already demanding, and advocacy work often requires long hours, travel, and constant engagement with lawmakers.

Over the past year, I’ve had to strategically shift my focus, dedicating more time to advocacy. I’ve realized that if we don’t fight for a sustainable and fair regulatory environment, businesses like mine—and the entire industry—could suffer in the long run.

Misinformation is another significant challenge. Many policymakers still don’t fully understand hemp, CBD, and the benefits of cannabis. Educating them while countering misconceptions is a constant uphill battle. But I truly believe that knowledge is power, and every conversation we have is a step toward progress.

The Importance of Federal Legalization

SCHAA: Why do you believe federal legalization of cannabis is essential, and what impact would it have on local businesses like yours?

Spang: Federal legalization is the key to unlocking the full potential of the cannabis industry. Right now, the patchwork of state regulations creates uncertainty and unnecessary barriers for businesses.

For companies like Coastal Green Wellness, federal legalization would mean:

  • Clear and consistent regulations that eliminate gray areas.
  • Access to banking and financial services, reducing reliance on cash transactions.
  • Expansion opportunities, allowing businesses to reach new markets without legal hurdles.
  • Improved product safety and testing standards to ensure consumer confidence.

Most importantly, federal legalization would provide safe access to cannabis products for the people who need them most. Patients, veterans, and individuals seeking alternative wellness solutions shouldn’t have to navigate inconsistent or restrictive laws to find relief.

The Role of SCHAA in Cannabis Reform

SCHAA: How has the South Carolina Healthy Alternatives Association supported your efforts in promoting hemp and cannabis reform?

Spang: SCHAA has been instrumental in uniting business owners, advocates, and consumers to push for meaningful change. Advocacy is always stronger when we work together, and SCHAA has provided the platform and resources needed to drive our mission forward.

From organizing educational events to engaging with lawmakers, SCHAA has created a collective voice for the hemp industry in South Carolina. I’m proud to be part of an organization that not only protects the interests of small businesses but also ensures that consumers continue to have access to safe, high-quality hemp products.

The Business Journey: Coastal Green Wellness

A Vision for Education and Safe Access

SCHAA: Can you share the story behind the founding of Coastal Green Wellness? What motivated you to enter the hemp industry?

Spang: Back in 2016, I saw the emerging federal policies regarding hemp and realized that South Carolina lacked safe, transparent access to this growing market. There was a significant gap in education and availability, and I knew I could make a difference.

That’s why I founded Coastal Green Wellness in 2017—with the mission to normalize cannabis as medicine and to provide a trustworthy source for hemp-derived wellness products.

From the start, we focused on:

  • Consumer education—empowering people with knowledge about CBD, cannabinoids, and their benefits.
  • Quality assurance—only offering third-party tested, high-quality hemp products.
  • Community engagement—building trust through open conversations and advocacy.

Today, Coastal Green Wellness continues to grow, but our core values remain the same: education, integrity, and accessibility.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Cannabis in South Carolina

As the hemp and cannabis industry evolves, leaders like David Spang play a crucial role in shaping its future. Through his work with Coastal Green Wellness and SCHAA, he continues to advocate for fair policies, consumer education, and safe access to cannabis products.

The fight for federal legalization is far from over, but with dedicated advocates and industry pioneers, progress is on the horizon.

For those who believe in the power of hemp and cannabis, supporting organizations like SCHAA and businesses like Coastal Green Wellness is essential. Together, we can create a future where cannabis is recognized, respected, and accessible to all.
